Art therapy is a form of psychotherapy that uses art media as its primary mode of expression and communication. Art in this context is not used as a diagnostic tool but as a medium to explore emotional issues which may be causing confusion or distress.

Art Therapists work with all ages from children to the elderly who have a wide range of difficulties or challenges. These can include emotional, behavioural or mental health problems or disabilities.

Art therapy is provided in groups or individually depending on an individual's needs and art skill or experience is not necessary.

Art therapy is influenced by psychoanalysis yet art therapists have been inspired by theories such as attachment-based psychotherapy and have developed a broad range of client centred approaches such as mindfulness and mentalisation-based treatments.
